Cumbres & Toltec Adventure

The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is America's longest (64 miles) and highest (10,015 feet) narrow gauge railroad. On day one, Carol and I road the train from Cumbres to Antonito in the parlor car which was nice and enjoyable. We stopped at Osier for lunch and to remove the helper engine so it could return to Chama. It's down hill to Antonito. The railroad crossed the New Mexico and Colorado border 6 times. On day two, we chased the train. Luck was with us. Because of several tours, extra cars were added requiring that the train be triple headed. This was only the second time this year for a triple head. It was really enjoyable to hear those engines working the 4% grade from Chama to Cumbres Pass. They were working so hard that at one point they lost traction. For more information see: Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad web site.
